CHANDIGARH: In a relief to more than 1 lakh property owners, the municipal corporation is set to extend the deadline for the payment of property tax arrears for the current financial year from April 15 to 30.
Self-assessment of tax for the coming financial year will be from May 1 to June 30. This is for a rebate of 10% on commercial property and 20% on residential property. The official order will be out in a few days.
The extra time is in view of the ongoing curfew. Otherwise, the arrear payment deadline was to expire on March 31 and self-assessment for coming financial year is from April 1 to May 30, but now taxpayers in both segments have more relaxation.
A senior official in the MC said: "Since the Prime Minister has announced a 21-day lockdown, till the second week of April, we will give 15 days of more relaxation to people and let them deposit their current financial arrears till April 30. Self-assessment for rebate will also be delayed."
Sources in the civic body said the novel coronavirus scare had led to procedural delays in tax collection. "Since the MC had to send the bills to all the payers of commercial and residential property tax for the coming financial year starting from April 1, the same could not be started. The process of printing of bills could not start, so now this exercise will also be delayed," the source in the MC said.
